The Millennium Hoi Tak boardroom in Hong Kong had lot of seats, but not enough for the meetings we held there with the investment bankers from Goldman Sachs, Smith Barney, Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers. Lehman won the business and our preIPO project turned into the most over-subscribed IPO in Lehman history – 84 times oversubscribed. Chinadotcom. Not only was it the first China related technology related IPO, we did a $500M secondary offering with Goldman
Sachs six months later. Peter Yip took a 4 employee start-up to a $5B market cap. Peter invited Millennium to join the company when he did.
Millennium was merchant banker & advisor to Chinadotcom and its parent company for six years, until one year after Peter left the company due to illness. Partnering with the most powerful companies in China helps assure that your product or service will succeed in China, and also that IP rights will be respected. The large public companies highly value and respect intellectual property rights. This is the reason they will do the JV. Because they respect and highly value the IP. So much so they are willing to fund the cost of the land and factory, all of it, so that they can be the exclusive partner with the western company on the production side.
For businesses not involved in national defense, there has never been a better time to do a joint venture in China.
The same can be said for going to the UK, Europe and the Middle East. Never has there been more capital and local corporate partnership available for US companies, to aid them in their global business strategies.
